Why Draw? Why Paint?
I have always heard a voice urging me "well say something". It seems a reasonable, even intelligent request considering the display that is being put on for me. after trying various forms of expression, I came to understand that if there were a chance for me to speak, with anything near a quality commensurate with the stimulus, it would be by making pictures. Of all the things that I do, this is the one I do best.
The landscape of a face, twist of a neck and gesture of a hand express a unique person and at the same time, in my opinion, the whole pageant of life. Is there something I can say, and by speaking, understand a little better? Yes, yes and again yes. I teach and learn with each picture.
I love the stuff of art, the way a passage of the right gray makes a yellow come alive, the emergence of an interesting negative space, the smell of paint, of crayons, of solvent, the grag of charcoal over laid paper. I love the sfumato. contraposto and chiaroscuro, all the delicious items on the menu.
I treasure the community of artists. Thier help, often delivered in unusual ways, is a source of growth and joy.
Jim Tinguely; doing my best.
