From flax seed, a common fiber crop, comes linseed oil. Linseed oil, combined with pigments renders oil paint. Oil paint, combined with the skills of a master, renders a masterpiece.

It is of little surprise that this noble medium has produced so many of the worlds masterpieces. It was the medium of choice throughout many of the great periods of art history. Periods like the Renaissance and the impressionistic eras. The luster and sheen of an oil painting is hard to beat. The ability to render seamless bending of color and its ability to capture fine detail make it an ideal medium for both realistic images and abstracts that seem to extend beyond the two dimension limitations of the canvas. Little wonder indeed that this is still the medium of choice for many of the great artists of our day.

The Haverhill Art Association is proud indeed to have in its membership a few artists that can indeed be called great. Following is a sampling of artwork by artists that are truly great and pieces by artists still aspiring for greatness. As always in the world of art, you are the judge.
