Woodblock carving tools

Originally used as a method of communication, printmaking has become an artistic medium possessing unique qualities. Shortly after paper was invented by the Chinese, the method of carving into wood or stone and pressing paper onto the inked plate allowed multiple images to be created. This technique was originally used as a means of communication and the Japanese used it to produce copies of Buddhist teachings. As the invention of paper spread to Europe, so did the technique of printmaking.

Melencolia by Abrecht Durer

Since the time of the Renaissance, individual artists have been known for their spectacular use of printmaking. Albrecht Durer dazzled fifteenth century audiences with the exquisite detail and craftsmanship of his paintings, woodblock prints, and engravings. Two hundred years later, Rembrandt’s mastery of the intaglio medium enabled him to create an influential group of over three hundred printmaking plates. At about the same time, Japanese artists such as Katsushika Hokusai took the art of woodblock printing to new heights. The techniques of printmaking have since expanded to include etching, mezzotint, lithography, silkscreen, and mono print.
